Top 10 Summer Activities

A day on the green

Good food, good wine, good music – the Day on the Green concert series combines three of my favourite things to make for a gorgeous, chilled day out. This season, I’m particularly looking forward to catching Leonard Cohen at Sandalford in his first Australian tour in 24 years. Find an event near you at http://www.adayonthegreen.com.au.

Fish and chips at the beach

We’re spoilt for choice in Australia when it comes to both beaches and fish and chips but I’m convinced I’ve got the best fish and chip shop in the entire world right near my house. Captain Peters I salute you! And City Beach is just close enough that my fish and chips (and the occasional dim sim) are still hot when I get there. Mmm – greasy goodness!

Outdoor Cinema

There’s nothing better than watching a good flick at one of our gorgeous nature spots on a beautiful summer’s evening. My pick of the bunch is the Moonlight Cinema at Kings Park. Check out the listings at http://www.moonlight.com.au.

Wine tasting in the Swan Valley

Having grown up in the Swan Valley, I’m quite partial to a cheeky tipple out in my old stomping ground. There are so many great wineries to choose from but I always find myself going back to the beautiful Upper Reach Winery. Set on the banks of the Swan River, the ever friendly owners have created a stunning destination that oozes rustic charm. http://www.upperreach.com.au.

Waterskiing the Swan

Another summer love is waterskiing. Deep Water point is a popular choice for a day on the water but, if you don’t have access to a boat, there are a number of ski companies located in South Perth where you can go along and give it a try. Just look out for the jellyfish!

Roughing It

Every now and then I like nothing better than getting back to nature and going bush for a few days so I was devastated when I heard that my favourite campsite at Logue Brook Dam had been closed to the public. However, I am happy to report that the Dam reopened for recreational use as of 1 December 2008. Now where did I put that tent…?

Bushwalking

If I’m feeling the need to escape the rat race but don’t have enough time for a camping trip, I often head out to Bells Rapids in Brigadoon. The Rapids are a popular spot for watching the Avon Descent during winter but are breathtaking any time of year.

An Aussie BBQ

I wouldn’t be Australian if I didn’t include a good old fashioned BBQ in my top 10. Burnt sausages and mosquito bites aside – I love ‘em! Throw in a bit of backyard cricket or some boules and I’m in heaven. Where? Its got to be the South Perth foreshore, surely?

Sunday Session at the OBH

What better way to wrap up your weekend than sitting in the front bar of the OBH with a few friends having a couple of Coronas? If you’re really lucky you might have the unforgettable experience of watching a summer storm rolling in across the ocean. Bliss! http://www.obh.com.au.

A Weekend at Rotto

With its unique flora and fauna and some of the most spectacular bays and beaches you could hope to find, a weekend at Rottnest is the perfect antidote for burnt out city slickers. The Rotto Bakery is an old favourite and I’m loving the design of the new pub. http://www.rottnestisland.com.

Twilight Horseriding

Last but not least, is twilight horseriding. There’s nothing more relaxing than meandering slowly through the bush or more exhilarating than picking up the pace and having a good gallop. The Brookleigh Equestrian Estate in Upper Swan is an excellent choice for a trail ride through the beautiful winery region. http://www.brookleigh.com.au.
